The symposium titled “The Tradition of Ashik from Korkut Ata to the Present Day” was organized in Baku, Azerbaijan, between February 28 and March 1, 2017, in partnership with Bayburt University, Yunus Emre Institute and Baku State University.
The opening speeches were made by Baku State University Rector Prof. Dr. Abel Meherremov, Turkish Ambassador to Baku Erkan Özoral, Azerbaijani MP Hikmet Babaoğlu, TDK President Prof. Dr. Mustafa S. Kaçalin, Bayburt University Vice Rector Süleyman Çiğdem, Kazakhstan Korkut Ata Scientific Research Institute Deputy Director Şırınbek Koybalıyev, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Folklore Institute Director Muhtar İmanov and Baku Yunus Emre Institute Director İbrahim Yıldırım. 42 scientists from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan presented papers in the symposium organized in 4 sessions. The symposium was attended by our university faculty members Prof. Dr. Süleyman Çiğdem, Assoc. Prof. Hamdi Güleç, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferdi Güzel and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Turgay Kabak participated with a statement.
On the other hand, Dede Korkut, the common cultural heritage of the Turkic states, was commemorated with performances from different branches of science and art. The program, which started with the ‘Dede Korkut’ show by Azerbaijani artist Novruz Novruzlu, featured Dede Korkut in the Kyrgyzstan group, while artists from the Kazakhstan group sang Dede Korkut compositions. Ashik poetry and Central Asian folk music were performed by the Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey groups. Bayburtlu Ashik Süphani from the Turkey group attracted great attention with his style and music.
