Under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Önder AYDEMİR, one of the faculty members of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of our university, "Applied Brain Computer Interface Training" will be held between 24-26 September 2025 within the scope of TUBITAK 2237-A Scientific Education Activities Support Program.

Applied Brain Computer Interface Training

GENERAL INFORMATION

24-26 September 2025

Karadeniz Technical University, Medical Device Design and Manufacturing Application and Research Center, TRABZON, Turkey

PURPOSE OF THE EVENT:  To increase the awareness of students who are interested in neuroscience and brain computer interface (BBA) technology and studying in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs of universities, in the field of brain computer interface, to contribute to the technological and scientific development of our country and to contribute to the development of their knowledge and skills in this direction. In order to achieve this goal, the scope detailed below will be conveyed theoretically and practically to the students participating in the training.

SCOPE: The instructor staff is very experienced in BBA and has many scientific articles produced in this field and projects that they have completed/are carrying out. In addition, 1 professional Brain Product brand EEG device, 1 Brain Product brand X.ON EEG device and 6 Neurosky mobile EEG devices will be used for the recommended training in the Neurophysiology Engineering Laboratory under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. Önder AYDEMİR in Karadeniz Technical University Medical Device Design and Production Application and Research Center, where the training will be held. The teaching staff aims to have a share in the development of this technology in our country by transferring their knowledge to the students who are interested in this field.

The scope of the training is as follows: the functioning of the human brain is an organ that is in the focus of researchers with its mysterious structure that has not yet been fully discovered. Today, it is taken into account in researches in many disciplines from engineering to education, from sports to finance. Especially with its name in the literature, which is called "thinking power" in the public, BBA is shown among the technologies of the future. BBA is a system that is used to control devices such as computers, wheelchairs or neuro-prostheses at the will of the brain without using the normal output pathways consisting of peripheral nerves and muscles. These signs are; recorded from the scalp; slow cortical potentials, P300 potentials, mu or beta rhythms, and cortical neuron activities recorded from the electrode transferred to the cortex. Signals are translated into commands in real time to control the computer monitor or other device. In recent years, interest in this technology has increased excessively, especially in the United States, South Korea, the People's Republic of China, Austria and Germany. BBAs record the neural activity of the brain, analyze it with artificial intelligence algorithms, and determine which of the user's application commands they are thinking, making it possible for them to control the relevant electronic device with only their thoughts.

CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPANT SELECTION: Participants will be selected from among doctoral students who have not passed at least undergraduate (3rd year students), master's and doctoral qualifications, and the total number of participants is planned to be 20.

Other criteria for the selection of participants are:

a) To be a student of the Faculty of Engineering, Science, Medicine or Health Sciences and the Institute of Health Sciences or Science of universities

b) Participating in the event with an innovative project idea proposal

c) Not having previously participated in a project training supported within the scope of this program,

d) Participants must be registered in the TÜBİTAK ARBIS database,

e) Priority will be given to those who have received/are receiving support from the 2209-A University Students Research Projects Support Program and/or the 2209-B Industry-Oriented Undergraduate Research Projects Support Program, provided that they are documented.

f) The education announcement will be sent to all university rectorates to be sent to the relevant faculties and institutes of the universities, and applications will be requested to be made through the online application form to be prepared until August 15, 2025. The application form will also be visibly published on the web page of the training.

 

PARTICIPATION:

ü It is necessary to apply and accept the application before participating in the event.

ü Applicants who are accepted and not accepted to the event will be admitted to the event  by 15 August 2025

You will be notified via email after the date.

ü Participants will be given a certificate of participation at the end of the program.

ü Participants' expenses will be supported from the project budget.

ü The subsistence and accommodation expenses of the participants from outside Trabzon and the subsistence expenses of the participants from Trabzon will be covered from the project budget.

ü The travel expenses of the participants participating from outside Trabzon  will be covered from the project budget within the limits determined by TÜBİTAK.

The event will continue for 3 days and participation is 100% mandatory. The event program and other information will be provided to the participants via e-mail before the event.
