Objective;
The main purpose of the Department of Common Courses is to support the professional knowledge and skills of our students in accordance with the mission and vision of the university, to increase their cultural background in order to contribute to the studies they will carry out, and to improve their communication skills in both mother tongue and foreign language. The courses carried out by the Department of Common Courses are carried out through distance education and are planned in a way to ensure that students can easily access the courses and teaching materials.
All these educational processes are regularly evaluated in line with accreditation standards and quality management principles. In this context, the Department of Common Courses is based on the principles of transparency, reliability and continuous improvement by considering the strategic goals of the university in all its activities.
- The Department of Common Courses was established as an academic department affiliated to our Rectorate with the Senate Decision taken at the session of the University Senate dated 11/02/2022 and numbered 2022/03.
- Turkish Language, Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution and Foreign Language departments are located within the Department of Common Courses.
Our Works and Duties:
The Department of Common Courses provides the services required by its jurisdiction and the duties specified in the law within the framework of the Higher Education Council, the Law on the Organisation of Higher Education Institutions and other legislation to which BAYU is subject. It is responsible to the Rectorate while fulfilling its activities.
The duties, authorities and responsibilities of the Head of the Department of Common Courses are stated below:
- In Article 12 of the Higher Education Law No. 2547, among the duties of the university, which is defined as providing "education-training, scientific research, publication and consultancy services at various levels", the fulfilment of the issues related to its field,
- Planning the activities of all academic and administrative unit personnel in order to fulfil the activities to be carried out effectively, efficiently, economically and with high quality, and carrying out these activities in accordance with the plans,
- Determining the needs of the department regarding administrative, financial and physical resources, making resource management, using the resources provided effectively and efficiently,
- Determination of in-service training needs and annual training planning,
- Keeping statistical information about the education, staff and physical space of the department,
- Carrying out disciplinary, administrative and academic procedures related to students and academic-administrative staff,
- Providing education and training services to students in accordance with the contents planned in the curricula,
- Determining the needs of administrative and academic staff and coordinating their supply
- The Department of Common Courses fulfils these duties through the following academic and administrative units:
1) Academic Units:
a. Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution
The main purpose of the Department of Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution is to carry out the Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution course, which is one of the compulsory common courses to be taught in accordance with Article 5/i of the Higher Education Law No. 2547. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to the training of students as good citizens who are useful to their country in line with Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions.
b. Turkish Language Department
The main purpose of the Turkish Language Department is to teach the Turkish Language course, which is one of the compulsory common courses to be taught in accordance with Article 5/i of the Higher Education Law No. 2547. With this course, it is aimed to make students comprehend the structure and functioning features of Turkish, to gain the ability to use Turkish correctly and beautifully in written and oral communication and to develop the awareness of mother tongue in students.
c. Department of Foreign Languages
The main purpose of the Foreign Language Department is to carry out the Foreign Language course, which is one of the compulsory common courses to be taught in accordance with Article 5/i of the Higher Education Law No. 2547. Accordingly, through foreign language courses, it is aimed to teach students the basic rules of the foreign language they take, to improve their foreign language vocabulary, to understand what they read and hear in a foreign language and to express themselves orally or in writing.
2) Administrative Units
a. Registry Unit:
- Carrying out office work; recording incoming and outgoing documents, making all kinds of correspondence related to the department within the circulars and instructions, delivering them to the relevant unit / department and authorities,
- Receiving all kinds of notifications, making current and archive filing according to the file plan for incoming and outgoing correspondence,
- Removing the documents that need to be archived at the end of the year, and delivering the expired documents to the organisations for destruction or recycling,
- Monitoring of amendments to laws and regulations.
b. Personnel and Personal Affairs Unit:
- Carrying out personnel affairs related to the academic and administrative staff of the department; transfer, appointment, resignation, relocation, retirement, military service, extension of term of office, promotion, leave, etc,
- Unit correspondence, preservation and archiving of documents in accordance with the requirements of the legislation,
- Organising the documents related to the financial obligations of the academic and administrative staff of the department and notifying the accrual office,
- Ensuring that property declarations are received, hidden and sent to the relevant places according to the Property Declaration Law No. 3628.
c. Department Secretariat:
- To carry out all correspondence prepared by the Department Head
- To forward the incoming letters to the Head of Department and to ensure that the letters are forwarded on time
- To carry out the correspondence of academic staff regarding the extension of time, domestic and international assignments, leave petitions, compensation programmes, staff allocation procedures, resignation, commencement and course assignments
- To ensure that internal and external mail operations are carried out together with the clerical affairs and that the mail and other documents belonging to the department are distributed to the relevant persons
- To coordinate the work related to the department between students and teaching staff, to help communication
- To forward petitions from students and lecturers to the Head of Department
- Organising meetings, presentations, seminars etc. to be held in the department and preparing minutes and reports
- To organise the documents within the scope of the accreditation studies of the departments, to keep the records and to ensure their preservation
- To make the necessary transactions through the automation system of the department
- To forward the material error petitions received regarding grade procedures to the relevant instructor, to file them and to forward them to the relevant unit in case of material error
- To determine the deficiencies and mistakes in the documents submitted by students and lecturers and to ensure that the necessary arrangements are made
- To perform other duties to be assigned by the Head of Department
d. Quality/Management System Team:
To ensure that the work of establishing, implementing, monitoring and ensuring the continuity of the Quality/Management System of the Department of Common Courses in line with the BAYU Quality Directive, Quality Policy and objectives is carried out on behalf of the Head of Department.
The duties and responsibilities of the unit quality team are as follows
- To support the establishment of internal and external quality assurance and integrated quality management system,
- To carry out studies for the creation, dissemination and development of quality culture,
- To ensure that the quality policy is known and implemented at all levels of the organisation,
- To ensure the coordination of the work for determining, organising, implementing and maintaining the processes related to the integrated quality management system of the unit and to record them,
- To support the establishment of the department quality commission, to determine the working principles, to support its activities and to monitor the activities carried out,
- To ensure the implementation and development of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and YÖKAK Service Accreditation,
- To ensure the preparation of quality documents,
- To distribute, revise and follow-up the Quality Management System documents,
- Follow-up and preservation of external documents,
- To evaluate the request forms received from the units and units,
- To ensure the coordination and planning of internal audits and the realisation of audits in line with this plan,
- Initiation of corrective and preventive actions related to non-conforming services, coordination between units, exchange of views and follow-up of non-conformities,
- To ensure the planning, organisation and realisation of training activities.
